Nothing says summer quite like time spent in your backyard with friends and family. But, there’s one thing that can quickly ruin your fun in the sun: termites. Before heading off to enjoy your favorite summertime activities, remember to protect your home. If you’re not careful, you could be inviting pests into your yard and home.

Here are five places termites could be hiding in your yard:

  1. Tree stumps can easily become infested with termites. That’s why it’s best to remove the entire tree right away. If you have dead or dying trees or shrubs, remove them from your property as soon as possible!
  2. Firewood should be kept at least 5 feet away from your home. While it may come in handy for bonfires, make sure to keep firewood away from the foundation of your home and on a rack to avoid direct-to-soil contact.
  3. Clogged rain gutters can contribute to above-ground termite infestations. Unclog your rain gutters during spring cleaning, and make sure your flexible waterspouts are aimed away from your home, preferably 6 to 10 feet away.
  4. Unturned mulch can be a cozy, inviting place for termites and other pests to nest. Termites love the moist environment and may use that mulch to access your home. Be sure to turn your mulch or refresh it seasonally and avoid keeping it right next to your home.
  5. Wooden furniture, decks and swing sets also are feeding grounds for termites. If you notice any signs of rot or damage, call a pest management professional for further inspection and treatment.

Because it’s common for one or more termite colonies to be present around a house, new colonies may emerge from nearby and forage into your yard. With a termite baiting system in place, you have 24/7/365 protection from termites. Use these tips to prepare your yard and avoid unwanted guests at your backyard barbecue. For complete peace of mind find a termite professional to inspect your yard and home.
